Mount Batur is an active volcano rising 1,717 metres above sea level, and the pre-dawn hike to its summit is one of Bali's most rewarding experiences. The climb itself is challenging but achievable for anyone with reasonable fitness — no technical climbing required. The trail is rocky and steep in sections but well-worn. Groups typically depart at 2am, reaching the summit around 5:30am just as the sky begins to lighten. As the sun breaks over Mount Agung to the east, the cloud sea below turns pink, orange, and gold. Local guides cook eggs in the volcanic steam vents. It is genuinely extraordinary.
